Moonrise, Moonset

February 21, 2022
ocotillo sunrise

One coyote was calling.

This Costa’s hummingbird (Calypte costae) was bathing in a flow from the spring at first light with no other humans out and about in the campground. We saw Baja California treefrogs mating in it the night before.

Said Costa’s hummingbird and his competitors were guarding this Lycium fremontii shrub and others of its kind.

Palafoxia arida

It’s not going to be a “hashtag superbloom” year in our desert, but I saw pockets of germination. Plant enthusiasts who enjoy the hunt will be rewarded by a bloom here and there.
